Eight Off-Road Driving Tips for Trail Riding

These eight off-roading tips will not only make sure you get the most out of every ride but will also help you share your newfound passion with friends and family for many years to come.

1. Prepare Your Off-Road Vehicle

Your pre-ride checklist is standard and detailed in your Can-Am Operator’s Guide. Check the tire pressure, oil, fuel and coolant levels, and the air filter to ensure all are ready to ride. With a proper pre-ride check, it’s unlikely you’ll need spare parts or tools, but it doesn’t hurt to have a few extras for those “just-in-case” moments. A spare tire, drive belt and toolkit equipped with the essentials are all recommended. It’s also a good idea to carry a tow strap for those friends in need. You never know what kind of friendship lending a quick hand can lead to.

2. Proper Off-Road Riding Gear

The right off-road gear — and a few extras — can mean the difference between discovering what’s over the next ridge and an early return to home base. A motocross-style helmet and goggles are great for warm weather, while a full-face style might be better for cooler rides. Moisture-wicking layers close to the skin will have you dry and comfortable all day. Long sleeves, pants and gloves should be worn for protection against the elements. Boots above the ankle offer sure footing and added protection as well. Don’t forget to always bring an extra set of gear, because no story ever ended with “and we made it back sparkling clean.”

3. Create an Off-Road Itinerary

A new town. A place for lunch. That scenic overlook you’ve been dying to see or set up camp on for the night. It doesn’t matter where, just have a destination in mind, a route to follow and a few ideas of where you might want to take a short break or refuel along the way. Before you leave, make sure you share your plans with someone back home and let them know when to expect you back. Double-check the weather and stock your LinQ cooler with a few snacks and plenty of water for the adventure. A plan B is never a bad idea in the event of unexpected trail closures or poor conditions.

4. How to Load and Unload Your Off-Road Vehicle on a Trailer

Loading and unloading your vehicle on a trailer can be one of the most intimidating parts of off-road adventures — but it doesn’t have to be if you remember these three words: “Take.Your.Time.” Make sure the weight on the trailer is properly distributed. Use the “60/40 rule” with 60% of the load weight in front of the front trailer axle and 40% behind it, with the weight evenly distributed side to side. Don’t forget to account for any additional cargo like gear and coolers. With everything placed on the trailer, set the vehicle parking brakes and use straps with the appropriate weight capacity to secure your vehicle and cargo.

5. Be a Responsible Off-Road Rider

First, we’re going to tell you what your mother told 16-year-old you before you borrowed her car: always wear your seatbelt and slow down around curves! Being a responsible rider; it can’t be said enough. Stay on the trails or within designated riding areas. Understanding that the trails we ride cross a combination of public, private and managed land is a big deal. Staying within the marked trails and riding areas keeps everyone happy and helps ensure we have more adventures to enjoy in the future.

6. Join an Off-Road Club or Association

Just like elementary school, making new friends is a big part of what makes the ride so much fun, and it can open worlds of new adventures. By connecting with local off-road riding groups, you’ll discover new tips, sights to see and places to go, and learn just how insanely cool and diverse the community of off-road riders really is. As a safety measure, riding with others is one of the best off-roading tips we can give so you’re never alone on the trail.

7. Off-Road Group Rides are Just Better
