Misleading park position displayed in instrument cluster

Dear Can-Am Off-Road® Owner,

This notice is being sent to you in accordance with the requirements of Transport Canada. BRP has decided that a defect which relates to motor vehicle safety exists on certain side-by-side models and is conducting a safety recall.

Our records show that you own a potentially affected vehicle.

Which models are involved?

The vehicles involved are certain serial numbers of the following models:

MY 2016 Can-Am Defender
MY 2016 Can-Am Defender DPS
MY 2016 Can-Am Defender XT

What is the potential problem?

On certain 2016 Can-Am Defender Side-by-Side vehicles, the instrument cluster may display the gearbox position “P” even though the gearbox is not mechanically engaged in the park position.  In some circumstances, this misleading display may result in the vehicle unexpectedly rolling away, which could lead to injury or even death.

To confirm that your VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) is affected, contact your authorized Can-Am Off-Road dealer or BRP at 1-888-272-9222 between 8:00 a.m. and 8:00 p.m. Eastern time 7 days a week.

What should you do?

Contact your authorized BRP Can-Am side-by-side dealer and schedule an appointment to have your vehicle repaired.

The solution consists of performing a gearbox position learning. This repair should take approximately half an hour to complete. The dealer will perform this work at no charge to you.

What should you do until your vehicle is repaired?

Until this safety campaign has been performed on your vehicle, BRP recommends that your rock the vehicle forward and backwards whenever “PARK” is selected to ensure that “PARK” is mechanically engaged in the transmission regardless of the transmission position displayed in the cluster.

Note that the presence of aftermarket modifications will not prevent you from receiving the repair at no cost. The presence of these modifications during the repair will not affect any existing warranty or service contract.

What should you do if you feel this notice is an error?

This notice was mailed to you according to the most current information we have available. If you no longer own this vehicle or some information in this notice is incorrect, please contact BRP at your earliest convenience.
