Re: Possible Loss of Steering - Steering Coupling Stripping on Rack and Pinion Assembly
Dear Can-Am Off-Road® Owner,
Following an interim notice issued in April 2016, this notice is being sent to you in accordance with the requirements of the Consumer Product Safety Act and the Canada Motor Vehicle Safety Act. BRP has decided that a defect which relates to motor vehicle safety exists on certain side-by-side models and is conducting a safety recall.
Our records show that you own a potentially affected vehicle.
Which models are involved?
Model year 2013 Can-Am Commander™ equipped with Dynamic Power Steering (DPS).
What is the potential problem?
Steering coupling splines may strip on rack and pinion assembly. In some circumstances, this situation may result in a loss of steering control and possibly cause injuries or even death.
To confirm that your VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) is affected, contact your authorized Can-Am Off-Road dealer or BRP at 1-888-272-9222 between 8:00 a.m. and 8:00 p.m. Eastern time 7 days a week.
What should you do?
Contact your authorized BRP Can-Am side-by-side dealer and schedule an appointment to have your vehicle repaired. The parts required to provide the remedy to this condition will begin to be made available starting on July 22, 2016.
The solution is the replacement of the steering coupling. This repair should take approximately two (2) hours to complete. The dealer will perform this work at no charge to you.
What should you do until your vehicle is repaired?
BRP recommends that you avoid driving your vehicle until the final repair is performed.
In the meantime, if you must use your vehicle before it is repaired, please contact your BRP Can-Am side-by-side dealer and schedule an appointment to have your vehicle verified.
This verification is a temporary action to allow limited use of the vehicles until the availability of the parts for the final repair. This verification process will be available until there are sufficient parts made available for the solution.
Following the verification, if you still choose to use your vehicle, be aware that you must respect the following:
- Do not use at speeds above 50 km/h (30 MPH)
- Do not ride on rough terrain
Note that the presence of aftermarket modifications will not prevent you from receiving the final repair or the verification at no cost. The presence of these modifications during the final repair or the verification will not void any existing warranty or service contract.
