Choose the right 3-wheel vehicle helmet for you

Choose a helmet to fit your needs

A responsible rider has a good head on their shoulders. To protect that valuable asset, there are plenty of different types of helmets. Here’s a quick rundown for the different types of helmets that are on offer. Finding your type can help you both protect your head in collision situations and display your personality, based on your choice of headgear.

Regardless of whether you’re just starting your 3-wheel vehicle journey or have more mileage than you’d care to admit, you need a good helmet. Even if you’re a seasoned rider, you might have not heard of all the different types of helmets on offer. We teamed up with our brand ambassador Keith Hammer to talk about different types of helmets.

They all protect the top, back and sides of your head but vary in the amount of protection offered to your face. With that in mind you can start to narrow down what type of helmet is best suited to your riding style.

The helmets that are fit for riding a 3-wheel vehicle, like the Can-Am Ryker or Spyder, can be broken down to four main categories: Full-face, Crossover/Modular, Jet  & Open-face

Full-face helmets

Full-face helmets have the most protection, as they feature fixed chin guards and a full visor. As such, they are the least customizable of the bunch in terms of features. However, that doesn’t lessen the amount of visual customization you can do!

The full-face helmets’ chin guard is a feature that has a great impact on your safety. Tests have shown that a fixed chin guard absorbs up to 50 percent of the impact in a collision. This means it greatly lowers the chances of serious injury.

A full-face helmet also keeps your head warm as it has the least amount of exposure. If you’re riding mostly in colder climates, a full-face helmet could be your go-to helmet.

Crossover and modular helmets

Crossover, or modular helmets, as their name implies, are a type of helmet that is a mix between two types: the full-face and the jet helmet. Crossover helmets usually feature detachable chin guards, visors and peaks. This means they’re highly customizable and allow for you to make them your own in terms of the ratio of features and safety.

If you’re looking for a helmet that allows you to mix and match between rides and functions, e.g. shorter rides with a Ryker or longer trips with the Spyder, a crossover just might be the way to go for you.

Jet helmets

Jet helmets are a type of helmet that usually do not have a chin guard but feature a full visor. This combination means your face and eyes are protected from road debris while leaving your chin more exposed.

A jet helmet is more likely suited to your tastes if you like riding your Ryker or Spyder and feel the breeze while doing so. They’re also great for when you’re riding in warmer weather, so keep them in mind if it isn’t that cold where you’re usually riding.

Open-face helmets

What’s in a name? An open-face helmet is as it says on the tin: your face is completely exposed and only covers the forehead on the front. They offer plenty of freedom and minimal coverage. They do often come with integrated shields for your eyes, leaving you exposed to the elements without endangering your eyes.

Say you’re riding a Can-Am Spyder with a windshield, an open-face helmet is all you’re going to need in terms of protecting you from debris and the elements. However, you do need to be extra careful in terms of your own safety while wearing one.

Safety & Safe Riding above all else!

When you have your helmet type in mind, it’s time to go shopping – Can-Am has plenty of helmets to choose from, so an easy start is to visit your nearest dealer. There are many different styles and designs in each helmet type to keep you stylish in any scenario and whether you’re riding a Ryker or a Spyder. And of course, if you can’t find a design that you like, you can always customize…

Regardless of your choice of helmet type, you can make informed choices by making sure the helmet of your choice has a safety certification - ECE certification.
