What are the different types of Off-Road helmets?

When off-roading in your Can-Am vehicle, helmets are an essential accessory. Nonetheless, with so many different styles and options available on the market, from ATV to SxS models, it can be difficult to make sense of it all.

To illustrate some of the useful details and differences between them, we’ll take a look at two of the most common types of off-road helmets: the Motocross and the Full-Face helmet. However, the most important considerations will always be comfort, fit and safety rating. Therefore, it’s important to check your helmet’s DOT or ECE certification.

MX - STYLE HELMETS

The main reason you’d want to ride with a Motocross-style helmet such as the Can-Am Pyra is that it has a nimble and lightweight design that provides for both great visibility and breathability. Lightweight and uncompromising on safety, the Pyra Helmet can even be a great choice for year-round use.

Plus, after a long day of riding, the moisture-wicking liner is removable and washable so you feel fresh every time you gear up.

It’s built using ERT (energy reduction technology), a multi-density foam that provides extra protection and additional comfort. It evenly distributes the energy produced during a fall while also absorbing low-speed impacts.

To provide extra breathability for when the action heats up, the helmet also boasts both front and rear hi-max air vents. Don’t forget, MX helmets are designed to be worn with goggles, so be sure not to leave the house without them, as eye protection is a must-have.

FULL-FACE-STYLE HELMETS

Full-face modular helmets provide increased protection while still maintaining an unobstructed field of view. The Can-Am Exome Helmet, for example, is designed to be worn without goggles, as the fully integrated sun visor along with the anti-scratch lens ensure your line of sight remains clear. Even when you’re wearing gloves, the retractable sun visor can be triggered at the push of a button for easy access to your face.

It also has vents at the front and on top of the head that provide great airflow, ensuring you stay cool or warm. In addition to anti-fogging technology, look for a pin-lock-ready full-face helmet to keep the fogging at bay and your lenses clear. In all, full-face-style helmets like the Exome are made for the serious off-road riders looking for seriously unmatched protection.

Depending on what type of helmet for side-by-side riding is best for you, you can be sure of your choice.

Hopefully this article helped clarify the differences between the Motocross- and Full-Face-style helmets and determine which might be optimal for how you ride. To learn more or grab an Off-Road helmet for yourself, visit the Can-Am Off-Road Shop.
